About the presentation: Federal Gift and Estate Tax compliance require an understanding of a taxpayer’s obligations with respect to analyzing transactions and properly reporting them.  This session will provide a brief overview of federal and estate tax obligations before diving into interesting new developments and cases addressing compliance (and non-compliance), the penalties for noncompliance and defenses to the assertion of penalties.

Michelle Schwerin is a shareholder of Neill Schwerin Boxerman, P.C.  She represents individuals and businesses in tax controversy and litigation matters.

In 2023, Michelle was named Lawyer of the Year for Litigation and Controversy–Tax in St. Louis by Best Lawyers®, has been included in the Missouri and Kansas Rising Stars List by Super Lawyers® since 2018. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in business management from Tulane University and her J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.

Michelle serves as the Chair of the Standards of Tax Practice Committee within the Section of Taxation, American Bar Association. She is an adjunct professor of law in Washington University Law School’s Tax LL.M. program. Locally, Michelle sits on the boards of the Henry and Gladys Crown Center for Senior Living and St. Louis Jewish Community Center.  Michelle previously served on the St. Louis County Police Department Board of Police Commissioners and currently serves on the board of St. Louis County Economic Development Partnership.

Kristin Stokes Neusel is an associate attorney at Neill Schwerin Boxerman, P.C.   Kristin focuses her practice on representing individual and business clients in civil and criminal tax controversies and litigation.

Kristin previously worked as a judicial extern for Magistrate Judge Noelle Collins of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and at a large Chicago-based law firm advocating before state and federal administrative agencies.  Kristin obtained her bachelor’s degree in English from Saint Louis University and her J.D. from Washington University
